See the View from Sugarloaf Mountain

Marquette is full of beautiful views but Sugarloaf Mountain is easily one of the best. It’s panoramic view of Lake Superior combined with a gorgeous view of all the surrounding area make Sugarloaf a must see when visiting Marquette!

The hike to the top of Sugarloaf

The hike to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain is steep, but at 3,200 feet is relatively short. Two trails lead to the top, an “easy” route and a “difficult” route. You can expect to reach Sugarloaf’s summit in fifteen to twenty minutes on the difficult trail and up to a half hour (more if you take your time) on the “easy” trail.

Three observation decks for three awesome views

At the summit, 470 feet over Lake Superior, you’ll see three distinct observation decks. This keeps the viewing area from getting overcrowded, but each observation deck also offers a slightly different view.

One observation deck has a great view of Lake Superior and Presque Isle Park. Another deck faces a little more toward Marquette and offers a good view of the Superior Dome, and the third deck faces away from the lake and toward Hogsback Mountain. Be sure to bring your camera because the view from the top of Sugarloaf is really something to see.

Getting There

Sugarloaf Mountain is located about seven miles north of downtown Marquette on CR 550, which is on the way to Big Bay. Get there by taking Front to Washington. Turn west on Washington and go to Fourth Ave. Turn north onto Fourth, which becomes Presque Isle Ave. At Hawley, turn west. Hawley becomes CR 550. A sign that reads “Sugarloaf Mountain” marks the parking area and is easily visible from CR 550.
